iOS App Privacy
Privacy in the Captain Calm app.
Last updated: 15 May 2026
Introduction
This policy explains how the Captain Calm iOS app collects, uses, and protects your information. It applies specifically to the app. For our website, captaincalm.co.uk, see our website Privacy Policy.
Captain Calm is built to be private by default. You can use the app without creating an account, and we never ask for your name, email address, or any sign-in details.
No Account, Private by Design
The app does not have sign-up, login, or passwords. When you first open Captain Calm, it generates a random, anonymous identifier that stays on your device. We use this identifier only to save your worry log and keep your subscription status in sync. It is not linked to your real-world identity, and we cannot use it to find out who you are.
Information We Collect
Your worry conversations
When you use the Worry Button, the text of your conversation is collected so the app can respond and so your worry log is there when you return. This content is stored on your device and on our secure backend.
Voice input
If you choose to speak instead of type, the app uses Apple's speech recognition to convert your speech into text. Apple processes the audio under Apple's own privacy policy; the resulting text is then treated like any other conversation text. The microphone is only accessed while you are actively recording.
Your dog's profile
Details you enter during setup, such as your dog's name, are stored on your device and on our backend so the app can personalise its responses.
Usage information
We collect basic usage counts, such as how many conversations you have had, to apply free-tier limits and keep the service running reliably.
Subscription information
If you subscribe to Calm+, Apple processes the payment. We use RevenueCat to manage your subscription status and purchase history. We never receive or store your payment card details.
Anonymous identifier
The random, device-based identifier described above is used to associate the information here with your device.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide the core feature — AI-assisted worry conversations and your saved worry log
- Generate Pattern Insights from your past conversations
- Remember context from recent conversations so replies stay relevant
- Apply free-tier limits and manage Calm+ subscriptions
- Keep the service secure and prevent abuse
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.
AI Processing and Third Parties
To make the app work, some information is processed by trusted service providers acting on our behalf:
Anthropic (Claude AI — the Worry Button)
The Worry Button is powered by Anthropic's Claude API (anthropic.com). Each time you start or continue a Worry Button conversation, the app sends the following information to Anthropic so the AI can generate a relevant reply:
- The messages you type or speak in the current Worry Button conversation.
- Your dog's profile (the answers you gave during onboarding).
- Short text summaries of your past Worry Button conversations, so the AI has context.
The app does not send Anthropic your name, email address, phone number, account details, photos, contacts, location, device hardware identifier, or any identifier that personally identifies you. The only identifier accompanying the request is the random, anonymous app-generated UUID described above.
Anthropic processes this data on our behalf solely to generate the reply we ask for. Under Anthropic's commercial API terms, API traffic from Captain Calm is not used to train Anthropic's AI models. Anthropic's own privacy policy is available at anthropic.com/legal/privacy.
Before any data is sent to Anthropic, the Captain Calm app shows you a dedicated “How Captain Calm works” step during onboarding that names Anthropic, lists exactly what is sent, and asks you to explicitly agree by toggling an “I agree…” switch. The app cannot reach the Worry Button until you have given that permission.
Supabase
Supabase provides our backend and database, storing your worry log, conversation summaries, and usage data, associated with your anonymous identifier.
RevenueCat
RevenueCat manages Calm+ subscription status and purchase history on our behalf.
Apple
Apple processes payments for Calm+ and provides the on-device speech recognition used for voice input.
Each of these providers acts as our data processor and is bound by contractual commitments that provide protection for your data materially equivalent to those described in this policy, including restrictions on how they may use the data and a prohibition on selling it. Some may process data on servers located outside the United Kingdom; where they do, that processing is covered by standard contractual data-transfer safeguards.
Your Consent to AI Processing
Captain Calm asks for your explicit permission before sharing any data with Anthropic. The second screen of onboarding — titled “How Captain Calm works” — names Anthropic as the AI provider, lists exactly what the app sends and what it does not send, and requires you to flip an “I agree…” toggle. The Continue button stays disabled until you do. You cannot reach the Worry Button without giving this permission, and you can withdraw it at any time by deleting the app (which removes the local profile and stops further AI calls).
Data Storage and Security
Your worry log, your dog's profile, and recent conversation summaries are stored both on your device and on our secure backend, associated with your anonymous identifier.
We implement appropriate technical and organisational security measures to protect your information. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data Retention and Deletion
Deleting the app from your device removes all information stored locally on that device.
Information held on our backend is associated with your anonymous identifier. To request deletion of that information, contact us at contact@captaincalm.co.uk and we will help you remove it.
What the App Does Not Do
For the avoidance of doubt, the Captain Calm app does not:
- Show third-party advertising or use advertising networks
- Track you across other apps or websites
- Sell or rent your information to anyone
- Collect your location
- Require an account, your name, or your email address
Your Rights (UK GDPR)
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Rectify inaccurate personal data
- Erase your personal data
- Restrict processing of your personal data
- Object to processing of your personal data
- Data portability
- Withdraw consent at any time
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below.
Children's Privacy
Captain Calm is intended for adult dog owners. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date at the top.
